How to make a DLNA Server!

A backup on a external drive and media is a good start, but there is another tool for the toolbox. The tool is a DLNA server. This allows you to access the files of other computers on your network. This is extremely useful when you have a computer hooked up to your 3D printer. While you could upload your files to the web or copy the files to a usb drive, it is easier to use a DLNA server where none of this is necessary.

What is a DLNA server?

A DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) server allows the users on the network (the same wifi) to access the chosen files on other computers.

How to make a DIY DLNA server:

1. Locate the folder that you want to use as the server.

2. Right click, and click "Properties"

3. Then click on the share tab and click "Share". That's it, it's on your network.

4. To protect it, I would recommend choosing the "Advanced Sharing" option. In doing this you can control what accounts can access it and the permissions they hold. (These are the accounts you log into on your computer. Then it will ask for your computers password and account each time you access these files)

5. To access the file go to this directory and click your computer. (It may ask you to put in your user info depending on how you set it up) Then navigate to your folder.

Additionally, you can look into setting your computer as a VPN (Virtual Private Network) (Here) letting you access your files from anywhere or employ the use of a software to remote access your computer. (Here

Please note: To use the remote access function suggested you will need to use the same network or  setup your computer as a VPN to access on a different network.
